Despite the name there is nothing Ordinary about this skincare line.
When these were launched I saw an upsurge of excitement in the beauty blogger industry. Because this is the brand that bravely lifted the veil over the skincare industry, declaring skincare should not be over priced. And bringing ingredients like retinoid, niacinamide, Vit C, hyaluronic acid at an unconventional price (i.e. everything under $10). I mean who could have thought buying a $5-6 serum to work better than some of those over-hyped, over-priced products?
After stalking a dozen of instagrammers, on what they stocked up from the brand I went ahead and picked up some products for myself.
The four products that I got are :
Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5
Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%
Vitamin C suspension 23%
Azelaic Acid suspension 10%
Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (30ml $6.80) :
As we all know hyaluronic acid helps in securing moisture and creates plump hydrated looking skin. It is essential for keeping the skin youthful. And we all are aware what wonderfulness surrounds the hyaluronic acid when it comes to skincare and specially for people with dry skin. And this serum comes in combination with B5 which helps in furthermore surface hydration. The consistency of this serum is like thick water, which gets quickly absorbed into the skin. I love using this serum at night, followed by another layer of Niacinamide serum. And I have seen a significant improvement in my skin texture and over all appearance. And for what, a fraction of the price, in comparison to all the other products containing hyaluronic acid.
Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% (30ml $5.90) :
Zinc is associated with lot of skincare benefits. It is said to help warding off acne flare ups, healing and rejuvenating the skin. And since I have had been having occasional break out, more than I used to have. I thought it was a good time to try something with Zinc. And this came in at right price and right time and in combination with Niacinamide (Vit B3). It’s an ingredient that protects the skin from UV damage which can cause all sorts of funky skin care issues like discoloration, freckles and sun spots. Niacinamide is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant which in combination with Zinc helps in taking care of blemishes and healing any scars and acne spots. It has a thick gelly texture, which again gets quickly absorbed into the skin leaving it feeling “comfortable” dry. It’s not dry-dry but it definitely doesn’t leave behind a super hydrated feel after applying. Hence I love layering this on top of Hyaluronic acid2% serum and another layer of my daily moisturizer.
Now if I be honest, I love Vit C in my skincare, it in general helps brighten my skin, gives it a beautiful glow and makes my skin look and feel healthy overall. And I totally swear by Ole Henriksen’s Vit C brightening Serum (my all time favorite). So I was kind of expecting results like that serum with this vitamin C product. But I have to say with both the cream products I wasn’t quite a fan off, simply because they did kind of feel plasticy and left behind a subtle
fragrance whiff of plastic-rubbery smell, which was quite annoying and I couldn’t continue using the products for that reason. So I really can’t talk about these products much, however, I will try to use them again and see what I feel about them.
Overall – I feel for the price and the ingredients, this is a super awesome brand to check out. However one advice, before buying products from The Ordinary. I would suggest you do a thorough research of what ingredient would suit your skin type and what issues you have with your skin before even hopping onto the website. Because things can get quite confusing as the products are just labeled as Niacinamide 10%, Lactic Acid 5%, Alpha Lipoid Acid 5%??!!! So having a basic knowledge of the ingredients would be of a great help when it comes to buying products from The Ordinary for an extra ordinary skincare regime.
